How can chiropractic care help me during my pregnancy?

During pregnancy the body goes through many changes in a short period of time. Structural adaptation needs to occur to accommodate the growing baby. Specific to the musculoskeletal system, this relates to changes in the curves in the vertebral column to accommodate a growing belly. The ligaments in the spine, pelvis, and other joints in the body become more lax due to the hormone relaxin.

Relaxin and oestrogen is released, especially during the third trimester in order for the ligaments to loosen up which will enable the changes in the structure of your spine to accommodate your growing baby. The changes in the curvature of your spine, as well as the increase of the weight in your abdomen causes a decrease in your spinal stability and causes your pelvic joints to become hypermobile.

The muscles in your back and legs have to work harder to accommodate these changes, and this may lead to many different symptoms.

If you have a history of previous back pain, even before you became pregnant or if you have a job that is physically strenuous, you may be at risk of developing musculoskeletal aches and pains during your pregnancy.

Common problems that your Chiropractor can treat during pregnancy

  • Upper back and neck tension that can lead to headaches
  • Lower back pain and stiffness
  • Pain in the groin
  • Pain in the buttock/gluteal region which commonly refers into the back of the thighs
  • Sciatic related pain
  • Hip pain and discomfort

It has been reported that 50% of all pregnant women experience back pain during pregnancy and 50 to 75% of women experience back pain during labour.

Goals of Chiropractic care during pregnancy

The main goal is to keep you as comfortable and as pain free as possible for the duration of your pregnancy. Secondly, chiropractors aim to maintain optimal function of your muscles and joints, especially the lower back and pelvis. Mothers who wish to have a natural birthing experience can definitely benefit from receiving chiropractic care during their pregnancy. Your chiropractor may prescribe a few exercises or stretches that you can do at home. Chiropractic care is considered safe for most pregnancies unless you are experiencing vaginal bleeding, preeclampsia, or are at risk for going into preterm labour.
